How much wood have you burned this winter?
I'm halfway through my 5th cord of hardwood. We burn maple, alder, and birch. Birch is the heaviest and densest wood here besides the more rare native dogwoods and cherries. I don't typically burn softwoods as they are used for lumber and fence posts. I do use cedar for kindling though

Re: How much wood have you burned this winter?
I use a cord a month. I burn pine, cedar and alder. I live in softwood country so that is what is available. I don't mind burning the softwoods they are abundant and don't put out much creasote. Not to mention I can get as much as I want for free locally because of all the blowdowns and such.

Re: How much wood have you burned this winter?
5.5 cords of maple. Central Ontario. Mild winter. Also around 200bucks of oil.

Re: How much wood have you burned this winter?
Put that new stove in mid December and cut my use about in half.....typically, we used about 5-6 cords per winter, and went to 4 this year. For an entire heating season, I expect about 2 1/2-3 cords next year.

Bellvue, There's a farm I pass on the way to the office that's got a sign out ...$20 a corde.

If it's hardwood, for $20.00 a cord, my equipment would stay in the storage building! I would think between gas for the saw and splitter, 2 cycle mix, diesel fuel for the tractor, say nothing about wear and tear on equipment, one would have to have at least $5.00 in supplies. If I can't make more than $15.00 an hour, (even cutting up tops) I wouldn't sell it, but I sure would buy it. |
Re: How much wood have you burned this winter?
3.5 cords this season, colder than normal temps in Feb. here in SE Oh.
Hardwood fuel burned in a massive custom masonry wood stove, heated a 1300 sq. ft. rock home. The front of the home is oriented to the south for solar gain with about 150 sq. ft. of windows. Time to restock for the 2011 and 2012 seasons. Good luck |
Re: How much wood have you burned this winter?
3.5 to 4 for us. It has been a cold winter here and we had a large amount of soft wood mixxed in from tops left over from logs for my sawmill. We had some cherry and oak we used for night time fires.
Almost have half of what we need cut and stacked for the next winter, hope to have 2 years ahead by mid summer. |
Re: How much wood have you burned this winter?
None... that's one benefit about living down south.

Re: How much wood have you burned this winter?
Almost 3 cords of pine since Oct 2009 in Montana. There is much to be said for thick insulation and smaller windows.

Re: How much wood have you burned this winter?
One of my many projects this year is to build a new wood shed, twice the size of my existing one which holds 8 cords. My firewood would be better if it had another year to dry. My new one will hold 16 plus cords. Once the gardens are in, it's the next thing on my list. The Stihl 066 is raring to get back to work...

Re: How much wood have you burned this winter?
We've had an exceptionally mild winter here in Spokane: lightest snowfall on record and unbelievably mild temperatures. I think we only went sub-zero one night. We heat exclusively with firewood, but so far we've only used about three cords in a fifty-year-old very drafty house. Good news for us, bad news for Julian!
BTW, for anyone here in the Spokane area, Julian is a GREAT source for firewood. Cut, split, delivered (on time), more-than-fair prices (never even $5 more than he quoted), good quality wood, and exceedingly "plump" cords (no shortages.) Sorry for inserting an advertisement here, Mods, but the guy is good and he's honest. Gramma and I won't buy anywhere else. Three cheers for a reliable resource! :clap2::clap2::clap2: |
Re: How much wood have you burned this winter?
I have a 2000 sq ft home and my stove is very efficient so I burnt about 4 cord, all oak. Great wood it leaves little ash and has many BTUs you can tell by the weight of a piece as you handle it.
I still have unburnt wood, but as the days get warmer I turn the oil burner on and let modern technology do the work. The stove is a Lopi Liberty....http://www.lopistoves.com/product_gu...il.aspx?id=211 I live in NYS north of NYC where winters can be quite cold. http://goldismoney.info/forums/pictu...pictureid=1708 |

I have a Regency like Tennessee Andy, but mine's a wood stove in the basement which heats the whole house. |
Re: How much wood have you burned this winter?
I've gone to oil for the most part also. If we get into a snap of weather that will be cold for 7-10 days, I'll probably fire her up again, but I find the house gets way too warm if the temps outside are moderate.

Re: How much wood have you burned this winter?
Just purchased a lopi endeavor and it should be installed by the end of the month. Been cutting wood in preparation. The work of trying to stay warm next winter begins.:cooler:
I was going to wait until the fall to get the stove, however thanks to all you crazy (SHTF) paranoid people I became convinced that I had better not wait that long as you never know what tomorrow brings and being able to heat with wood in the winter is a huge plus.:36_1_63: |
Re: How much wood have you burned this winter?
Just a little bit over two cords.
Last year it was 3 1/2. The weatherliars are saying it is the warmest winter On the Olympic Peninsula since they started keeping records............ Quien sabe? scyth |
Re: How much wood have you burned this winter?
800 gallons of coal. Not sure how many pounds that is but I keep the coal in 100 gallon stock tanks. I started slacking because I was too busy to keep the fire lit in from Jan until now. It definitely saves me a lot of money when I keep up with it because the coal is free.

Re: How much wood have you burned this winter?
